Ah, those were the days to be a journalist. Why let a total lack of sources interfere with a great story, when you can let rumor and gossip do all the heavy lifting?
Russia now, as then, is a place where even the most outrageous sounding conspiracy theory often turns out to be true. And they do specialize in spectacular, multiple-fatality disasters. Still… hundreds of hungry wolves in a 20-mile stretch? Must have been a very lean winter.

Pages of the Past – totally addictive. Decades and decades of the Star and the Globe reproduced as (somewhat) word-searchable .pdfs. The search function is a bit hit-and-miss with the mungy old type, but it’s a whole lot better than nothing. I get it at work, but you can get in through the Toronto Public Library site. Start here.
