Bedside manner

From Konrad Yakabuski’s multi-page profile of Stephane Dion in the weekend Globe:
When he appeared on the Tele-Quebec public affairs show Les Francs-tireurs last fall, interviewer Patrick Lagace asked him to prove that he has a sense of humour.
Mr. Dion replied by asking whether he was familiar with the world’s shortest bedtime story.
“Do you know Bam, the Dog?”
Mr. Lagace admitted he did not, so Mr. Dion recited it for him: “The car goes by, and bam, the dog. Now go to sleep.”
Mr. Lagace was incredulous. “It’s not funny,” he said as Mr. Dion laughed almost uncontrollably and, it turned out, viewers squirmed.
I bet small children would actually be laughing hysterically along with Dion.
(Which still doesn’t mean it’s funny!)
Actually, I think it’s hilarious. Though I can remember telling the story of How Patrick Shot The Cat Who Was All Tied Up In Pink Nylon Rope at a party and everyone was shocked and appalled. It’s a funny story, yo!
- Les Francs-tireurs is a great name for a current-affairs show.
– Elaine was amused by the cat execution story – I think she’s more tough-minded than some of the other people there that night. Besides, you told the story – I wasn’t going to bring it up. The cat wasn’t very nice, anyway -
Next time tell the one about your Mom shooting the treed raccoons and poking them with rebar…
Now *that* was funny.
I had to get I. to explain the “Bam, the dog” joke to me… I thought it was because I missed some kind of formative Canadian childhood experience that prevented me from getting it.
